A Gaming Monitor can help change the experience of playing a game. Depending on the resolution (1080p, 1440p, 4k) you’re playing at as well as the speed of your monitor (such as 1ms), and your refresh rate (such as 144hz). The size is more so dependent on you and your available space. Various monitors come as the same monitor in different sizes. Some even come with curved/not curved variations. The higher resolution you game at, the harder it is to run. But what’s the point of playing at a higher resolution if you lose performance? Simple. Your game will look better and sharper because there will be more pixels per inch, so you get a higher quality image.

To address some common questions,

What is a monitors resolution? Resolution determines how many pixels are within the given dimensions. This is called Pixels Per Inch (PPI). The more PPI on your monitor, the higher quality and sharper image you will have. Today, this comes as 1080p, 1440p, 4k, 8k, etc. If you’re in the market for a monitor, look for this number. We recommend 1440p for a well balanced look to performance, if you have the rig to do so. An NVIDIA 30 Series 3060Ti and up, as well as a 2070 Super and up can run 1440p. If you have an older GPU, such as a 10 Series card, the only one that can game at 1440p is a 1080Ti. Other GPUs can run 1440p, but it may not be a good experience and even the 1080Ti struggles.

What is a monitors speed? A monitors speed is usually in terms of ms. This means 1ms, 2ms, 5ms, etc. What this number means is the amount of time it takes to shift from one color to another. This is important for gaming because while gaming the scene is constantly changing and most likely changing various colors. We recommend 1ms for Gaming for serious gaming, although you could go higher if this isn’t a big deal to you. Having too slow of a monitor speed (as well as potential other reasons), may result in color ghosting. This is not a priority when it comes to monitors, however it is something to look for if you’re serious about displays and gaming.

What is a monitors Refresh Rate? The refresh rate determines how many times per second your screen will refresh the image which is currently on it. Generally, for gaming you want a 144hz and up. For gaming, you could go as low as 60hz, however the higher the refresh rate the faster your screen is.

What is a monitor panel? Monitor panels come in IPS, TN or VA panels. This is the clarity of image for viewing and color. We recommend an IPS panel. If you can’t find an IPS panel, we recommend looking at VA instead. The colors of VA are lacking, however the contrast is excellent. The cheapest is TN. You can find monitors with better specs that are cheaper but use a TN panel. If you notice, two identical monitors in terms of size, spec and exterior build quality. One might be $1,000 and the other might be $350. What’s the difference then? Its the panel, which truly does affect the monitor

What features should I look for on a gaming monitor? That depends on your PC. The higher the resolution, the harder it is to run. One of the biggest features to look for on a gaming monitor is VSYNC or FreeSync. What this does is syncs your FPS to your monitor. This has to be setup in the control panel of your applicable GPU. This feature can get rid of any stutter or inconsistency you may see while gaming. This is not needed for gaming by any means, however it adds to the experience of gaming. We also recommend looking into a curved monitor, which will help add to the experience as well.

What size should I get? The size is mostly up to you and how much space you have available. At Supernova Gaming, we recommend a 27″ Curved Monitor. This offers an excellent gaming experience while not taking up as much space as a 30″+ monitor so it is a good in between. Realistically, it really depends on you what size to get.

2. Gigabyte G27Q

Smooth and Responsive

Features:

  • 1440p
  • 144 Hz
  • IPS Panel
  • FreeSync

+Why to Buy:

  • IPS Panel
  • Decent Refresh Rate
  • Clear colors

-Why Not to Buy:

  • Large base stand

The Gigabyte G2Q7 is smooth and response. It features an IPS Panel as well as clear colors. It has a 144Hz refresh rate, which although is decent for gaming does not compare to 165Hz or 240Hz. So why is it second? Design. The design of this monitor is fairly poor, meaning feels as if it was not well thought out. The base plate is a bad shape as well is large. We definitely recommend using an aftermarket monitor stand on this one.

3. ASUS TUF VG27AQ

Best Viewing Angles

Features:

  • 1440p
  • 165 Hz
  • IPS Panel

+Why to Buy:

  • Well designed
  • Excellent viewing angle
  • 165Hz
  • FreeSync

-Why Not to Buy:

  • Struggles to show dark colors

The ASUS TUF VG27AQ is an excellent overall choice. It features an IPS panel, 165Hz, and has one of the best viewing angles of the tested monitors. The issue we find with this monitor is that it struggles to show dark colors. The reason it loses an entire point, making it a 4/5 from us, is because its not uncommon to game in the dark. This could force users to put their monitor brightness up, which in the long run can damage your eyes.
