There are many different steps you can take to take care of your Gaming PC/Workstation PC. You can take care of it by not installing bloatware or potential viruses, then you can also take care of the actually hardware itself. Doing both is extremely important to ensure that your system lasts and performs at its optimal operating conditions.
Software
Firstly, we recommend staying away from bloatware. Bloatware is software/applications that run in the background of your PC and just take up unnecessary resources. Realistically, with a high-end PC, one piece of bloatware won’t affect your system. When you start to install various applications that are considered bloatware, then you may have a problem. Many antivirus programs could be considered to be bloatware, which brings us to our next point.
Get an antivirus software. Although we just said most are bloatware, they are still important. We recommend a lightweight antivirus software. Our favorite is Malwarebytes. The free version allows you to do full scans, however will not run in the background. The paid version can run in the background, however does not take the large amount of resources that others may. That is not saying other antiviruses are bad or you shouldn’t consider them, we just recommend looking for a light weight one or disabling them when you game.
Do storage disk maintenance. Many times, websites install cookies on your operating system, or random applications that you may have uninstalled keep stuff on your system. Small amounts of information are almost always left on a disk drive from anything that you do. Most of the time, these are called Temp Files. You can do “Disk Cleanup” to get rid of some if not all of these files.
Hardware
Probably the most important, plug your PC into a correctly rated and high quality surge protector or a UPS system. Why spend the money on a high-end PC if its going to be plugged right into the wall and could potentially be damaged by a surge? Although we use high quality power supplies, a surge can always damage these. We recommend using a surge protector with a rating of over 2000 Joules (J) or a True Sine-Wave UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). If you’re looking at purchasing a UPS, double check that it is a True-Sine-Wave. If not this can cause performance loss, sudden shutoffs, and more. A True-Sine-Wave delivers consistent power that other UPS systems may not.
Keep your PC away from heat and humidity. The two things that kill any electronics is heat and humidity. Avoid putting your PC near any heat sources, such as a floor heater, or exposed to excess humidity. A high-performance PC already generates its own heat so it doesn’t need any extra. We also recommend keeping your PC in a well ventilated area to avoid any heat build up, meaning we don’t recommend putting it in a cabinet. If you are located in Miami, FL like us, we wish you good luck avoided heat and humidity.
Clean the dust off. We recommend cleaning the dust covers of your system every so often. You can clean the inside of your PC with some compressed air and a dry microfiber towel.
We also recommend keeping your system off of carpeted floor. The issue with this is power supplies on some of our cases sit on the bottom of the case, and have a fan vent that faces down. Putting your PC on a floor with carpet will absorb the heat being put off by the PSU, thus added extra heat. The PSU may also get small fibers from the carpet inside.
Conclusion
It is important to protect your PC in more than one way. When you get a high-performance PC, it is not just a PC, it is an investment. Like any investment, you would want to take care of it to ensure it lasts. It is important to not only take care of the Operating System of your PC, but also your hardware which is the thing that really costs to not take care of.
