Differences between Gaming PCs and Workstation PCs

A Gaming PC and a Workstation PC each powerful in their own ways. A Gaming PC is used to play games on, but is excellent for general use. Why pick a gaming PC over a regular PC? Simple. The Gaming PC is much faster, much more capable, and generally much more reliable. A Gaming PC can not only run games and be used for general use, but also can double as a workstation. Many Gaming focused GPUs are actually also fantastic for workstation purposes. Especially the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090.

So what is a workstation used for? A workstation is used for various professional software and applications. This ranges from Machine Learning to CGI to video rendering, and so on. The issue with a workstation is they are focused on exactly just that. Working. Most workstation GPUs, such as NVIDIA Quadro cards, cannot function as a Gaming GPU. If they can, they generally do not offer a performance benefit in games, despite the high price tag some carry. This is why Supernova Gaming doesn’t let workstations be configured with a gaming GPU. Although a Gaming GPU can be used for workstations, our workstations are mostly focused on being pure workstation uses. We recommend getting a Gaming PC if you play any sort of games and use professional applications.

Gaming PC

As stated above, a gaming PC is used for various purposes. It can be used to play games, or double as a workstation, and are well rounded for general use. A Gaming PC is an excellent choice for a PC even if you aren’t too serious about playing games. This is why we offer the GTX 1660Ti. This card is powerful enough to get decent frames on most games at 1080p, relatively inexpensive, and offers decent performance. This card is an excellent choice for those not too serious about gaming, but want a fast and reliable PC. This goes for all GPUs.

What GPU is right for you really depends on what games you play and what you intend to do with your gaming PC since they are so well rounded. If you’re serious about gaming, maybe look into an NVIDIA 3080, but if you also use your Gaming PC as a workstation, the 3090 may serve you better.

A Gaming PC isn’t just for Gaming. It brings endless entertainment and use (at least a Supernova Gaming one does). It is versatile and can be configured to be almost anything you want it for. Want a workstation/gaming PC? Select one of our Gaming PC options. Want just an overall fast PC that doesn’t break the bank yet is still capable? Our Gaming PCs can still handle that.

What system would be good if I want a serious Gaming PC and a serious Workstation PC? As stated, a Gaming PC can double as a workstation but may not perform as well as one at certain tasks, and a workstation many times cannot play games or is not optimized for games. That being said, some components within the Gaming PC category are absolutely capable of workstation purposes, and we actually may only recommend them for workstation purposes. These components are the AMD Ryzen 5950X and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090.

Combined, you have an absolute monster PC which can handle any game you throw at it and any task you throw at it. If you were to contact us asking a recommendation for a high end gaming PC, we would most likely recommend the AMD Ryzen 5900X over the 5950X because the 5900X makes more sense for gaming, since the 5950X in most cases won’t even come close to its full potential, yet carries a much higher price. The 3090 would only be recommended for those that play strictly at 4K and even potentially 8K. But if you were to contact us asking for a high end Gaming PC and Workstation PC, we would recommend configuring a Gaming PC with the 5950X and the 3090 combined.

Workstation PC

A workstation PC is mostly used for professional software/applications and uses, such as AutoCAD, Machine Learning, Programming, Servers, Video Rendering, Content Creating, Advanced Calculations, and more. As said beforehand, a Workstation PC cannot double as a Gaming PC due to the nature of the graphics cards functionality. Even workstation GPUs that can play games, generally they are not optimized for this task so it is not really worth it to get one for any sort of gaming.

Why pick a workstation over a gaming pc? A workstation generally is more efficient that a gaming pc and workstations are among the most powerful types of computers out there. Not only are graphics cards in workstations different, but often processors and RAM. Although the Threadripper can be used to play games, is really better for workstation purposes. Same with Intel Xeon. Some Xeon processors are even scalable and focused towards servers. Note, Supernova Gaming currently only offers Xeon processors as special order. This is due to the fact the Xeon processors many times are used and pushed 24/7, and we offer Lifetime Warranty on all systems so special warranty may be needed.

A workstation can also be focused as a server or backup center. Really, a workstation is mostly focused on doing certain tasks. Some are focused on multi-tasking, others are focused on single tasks. Some are aimed for advanced calculations, others are focused on rendering. It really depends what you need the system for.

The issue with a workstation is they are often misleading. Many people see a high price tag and powerful computer parts, and just assume its going to run games the best. This is not the case with workstations. Workstation components are generally not optimized at all for gaming. This causes confusion because this super powerful and expensive system may only run a game at the same FPS as a budget Gaming PC. Some examples of components not optimized for gaming but can game is the AMD Threadripper and NVIDIA RTX Quadro cards.

Threadrippers, although they have many cores/threads, they have very low frequency per core/thread so they are fantastic for multitasking but terrible for single function. Quadro cards are mostly focused creating complex models, datasets, movie content creation, and more. The issue with these is that they are more than capable of playing games, however the performance they get on some games is comparable to a GeForce GPU that is a fraction of the cost.

Conclusion

While a Gaming PC and a Workstation PC are both powerful, they are very different. A Gaming PC is excellent for not only gaming, but also general use, reliability, and can double as a workstation. Especially with the right GPU selected. A Workstation PC is less well rounded, however is among the most powerful types of computers. Workstations are generally more focused and dialed in to the task that’s required of them. They may be configured to run Machine Learning, but would not be able to even boot up a game, none the less run it at 60+ FPS.

Supernova Gaming recommends a Gaming PC if you are going to: Game, have a workstation to double as a gaming PC, and overall general use. We recommend a Workstation PC if you are looking for the following: A system for professional software and applications, advanced calculations, etc. A Workstation is NOT recommended for those who want to do gaming. Although some GPUs and CPUs can play games, they are not optimized.
